Scandal, Season 2 Episode 10

Below are some of my random thoughts about last night’s episode. In the past, I’ve written more detailed essays on the show that are more “formal”, but these are just some thoughts.

The torture scenes of “Huck” were UNBEARABLE. I was in physical pain watching this. I think it was important to include, however, because as America condemns violence, it engages in violence and the hypocrisy rang sky high in those scenes. Further, “Huck” himself is a part of the culture of violence.

I love that “David” is still a “boy scout” character. I discussed this in a post I wrote about why I think the characters on Scandal work.

The fact that “Harrison” uses sexuality to get information is fascinating. That is something usually assigned to a female character. “Steven” used to do the same thing in Season 1.

“Mellie’s” gendered reaction to forging the President’s name, which is treason, was interesting…

I can sign Fitz’s signature in my sleep. I can do it perfectly. I’ve been doing it since he was governor. But I did not sign this paper lightly. I did not sign this without using my head. I’m not some man reacting out of rage and then thinking later. I am a woman. So I thought about it. And I made my decision.

Quite telling, that Shonda had a Black male character give that pro-Patriot Act speech in the torture room at the Pentagon. That felt like some quasi-Obama shade in regards to renewing that act in real life and his drone warfare. WELP! The Pentagon vs. America binary that this character and “David” engaged in was interesting.

When “Olivia” said “goodbye” to “Edison,” I was like DAMN! I mean…we all knew this was coming, but I didn’t expect it to happen this way. It was actually fitting that it occurred at the hospital where “Fitz” was since she literally has been emotionally divided between the two men, so the physical proximity of them both was interesting. It became clear that she didn’t touch “Fitz” the first time since she was still with “Edison.” Once she said that “goodbye” to him and touched “Fitz” in the hospital bed later, it became clear where her heart fully lies again.

“Cyrus” is both an awful and good husband to “James.” But mostly awful. His character is still very interesting to me. VERY. I also discussed him in the aforementioned post on Scandal characters.

When the men in the torture room had to release “Huck” on “Sally’s” executive order, and looked thoroughly disappointed, I felt SICK. That sentiment, that emotion conveyed in their disappointment of having to end the torture is a by-product of this incredibly violent, patriarchal culture that we live in. I felt ill. I’ve seen that kind of expression before…off-screen.

Um…I just love “Harrison.” When he was arguing with “Edison” in the hospital before “Olivia” arrived, I was like “go Harrison!” Hehe. Sorry, I love him. New Columbus Short stan here.

Oh gosh. The “hi” at the end. My eyes welled up. He’s awake!  I’ve discussed the problematic nature of “Olivia’s” and “Fitz’s” relationship in a previous post, but I also discussed how their chemistry, love, and friendship appeals to me as well, and how I’ve known such a chemistry in real life before, so there’s a personal familiarity with this which makes it appealing to me. The episode ended perfectly. I am pleased.

Yep…Scandal is still my favorite show.
